This theme for this week's Wacky Wednesday is wacky shoes! Wear your weirdest kicks. Today's Focus:Growth Mindset and the Brain
Last week we learned that the more we challenge our brain, the more it can grow, just like how working out makes our muscles stronger. Today we will learn more about how our neuropathways can help us learn complex ideas. We will also identify what we can do to help our keep our brains healthy and function better.
To prepare for our video discussion today, we will be taking some notes during the video. Go ahead and get out a pencil and paper, or open a word processing app (teacher's choice). Your mission today is to find at least 5-7 facts about the brain contained in the video segment below:
Discussion
1. Compare your list with a partner. Pick a brain fact from your list that you found interesting and discuss why this fact is important for you as a learner. Share these out as class.
2. Think back to your first day of school at iMiddle. Since this was a new place for you, you used a map to find all of your classes.
Do you still use a map to find your classes now?
Explain why you do not need to use a map anymore (hint: it has to do with your neuropathways)…
How are pathways built between our neurons in our brains? How do these neuropathways help us learn and remember?
4. What happens in the brain when you feel stressed?
5. The video named other ways that we can keep our brain healthy. See how many you can remember with a partner next to you. Discuss these as a class. Teachers may replay the last segment of the video (begin at 5:39) to review if necessary. Now choose at least three things you will do to help keep your brain healthy.
Exit Slip: Share what you will do to keep your brain healthy on your way out!

Day 2: Choosing your Advisory's Genius Hour topic(s) and creating an Essential Question
Share the possible topics for your classes advisory topic.
We are going to turn these topics into potential projects, so we need to develop an essential question for each one. But what is an Essential Question?
Split the class up and have students make essential questions for the two or three different possible topics. These may need to be re-crafted several times in order to create a strong Essential Question. Remember, this is not something that can be answered with a quick google search or a student survey.
Choose the best one to implement, if time allows. Make sure to keep these someplace safe to continue the work next week.
